US – US RRT helps at American Diabetes Tour De Cure in Des Moines
The American Diabetes Association hosts a bike ride each year to raise funds & awareness for diabetes. RRT in Des Moines volunteered to help out at the 2016 event, taking place at Lifetime Fitness in Urbandale, IA. The morning of Saturday, June 11th came with a crash and a boom as an all-out thunderstorm rolled in.
Thankfully, the rain stopped by the time the race was to begin, but with an average temperature hovering around 90 degrees, the clouds were a blessing in disguise for the bikers. These bikers don’t give up easily, rain or shine, wind or heat; they don’t stop for anything.
At 6:30am, the first batch of bikers rolled out exuberantly for their 75 mile journey. The RRT helped direct the riders to the trail where they did the majority of their route. Along the route, there were multiple rest stops providing the bikers with water & Gatorade to drink and pickles and peanut butter sandwiches to eat.
The next group of riders left at 8:00am for their 50 mile ride, and the last group of riders left at 10:00 for their 25 mile trip. All along the route, the RRT SAG drivers were stationed to rescue any bikers unable to complete the ride.
All in all, it was an inspiring day. There were many “Red Riders” (participants with diabetes) that completed the race. What a great bunch of people! RRT looks forward to helping at another event in the future!
