US – RRT Helps at October 8, 2016 Buddy’s Walk in Council Bluffs

At 6:15 in the morning of October 8th, RRT volunteers from Council Bluffs assisted at the 2016 Buddy’s Walk in Stinson Park.  The Buddy’s Walk is an initiative put on by the Down Syndrome Alliance of the Midlands.

The money raised from this event goes to local programs that support local families with Down syndrome children.  Another small portion of this money also goes to support the National Down Syndrome Society, whose mission is to be the national advocate for the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

As sponsors and teams began to arrive for the walk for downs syndrome children, RRT helped to carry their belongings and find a place on the grass to settle down and enjoy the day. Before long everyone was there and the event was in full swing. At last 2 hours before the walk began, a group of RRT volunteers gathered together to arrange and take team photos of all the walkers. RRT had three water stations where they handed out water and snacks to all the participants, as well as a team at the park helping with the kids by keeping them occupied by decorating pumpkins.

Around noon the walk began and RRT began assisting with setting up lunch tables and preparing the food. When the walkers came through the finish line of the walk, RRT helped to control and direct traffic to keep the walker’s safe. RRT had about 30 volunteers spread out among various positions, including serving food at the Colosseum, handing out the medals as the participants reach the finish line, running three refreshment stops along the course and driving lost or sick riders to the necessary areas for them to get the care they need.

When the walk was finally finished and the next task was cleaned up!  Within an hour RRT and a few other volunteers had Stinson Park back in order and the event was finished.

A huge thank you to all who made this day a great triumph, raising over $144 000 USD to support research and assistance for those living with Diabetes. RRT is looking forward to assisting at another one of these events in the future.
