US – RRT Gothenburg Support Relay for Life
The Gothenburg RRT was once again privileged to help at Dawson County’s Relay for Life Event. This year’s event took place in Lexington, NE on June 10, 2016. Hundreds of survivors, caregivers, and supporters of those with cancer showed up to participate in the event.
As temperatures rose in the upper 90’s, over 30 cancer survivors started off the event with the Survivor’s Lap. RRT members were stationed around the track to hand out cold water bottles and offer words of support. As the evening wore on participators walked memory laps around the track and visited various activity booths.
Once dusk had settled over the track the RRT helped set up a projector screen and light the luminary lanterns. Everyone joined in the luminaria lap and then settled down to listen to the inspiring Fight Back Ceremony. As the night drew to a close participators walked a few final laps to remember loved ones lost and those still fighting cancer.
In the end, the Dawson County Relay Teams brought in a whopping $53,503.43, and more was expected to come in after the event. This money will be used by the American Cancer Society to fund the research going on to find a cure against cancer. 25% of the total funds raised by the American Cancer Society go towards supporting services such as management, fundraising and general expenses. 75% of the total funds goes towards program services such as the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge facilities, the Road to Recovery program, the Look Good…Feel Better program, the Reach To Recovery support program, prevention and education, and detection and treatment. In addition to providing funds to the American Cancer Society, the Dawson County Relay for Life event resulted in six donations of hair made to Wigs for Kids.
The Gothenburg RRT considers it a great honour to be able to provide help and support at these important community events that strive towards putting an end to a disease that affects every one of us in some way or another. RRT looks forward to assisting at next year’s event as well!
