US – RRT Assists at the Alliance For Lupus Research Walk in Baltimore
Downtown Baltimore, Maryland dawned bright and clear as RRT volunteers prepared for the Alliance for Lupus Research Walk on June 4th, 2016. When the volunteers arrived, purple ribbons and balloons decorated the area. The color purple represents courage and endurance – which are both needed for those who battle with Lupus, and the knot represents the disease’s uncertainty and complexity.
The Alliance for Lupus Research Walk was held at Rash Field – the home of Baltimore Beach Volleyball – to raise awareness of the support needed to find new treatments and cures for battling this autoimmune disease. Their fundraising program, Walk with Us to Cure Lupus draws hundreds and thousands of persons that come to help support Lupus Research programs.
When the walk started at 10:00am, the atmosphere was very positive with many smiling faces and the DJ played upbeat music to keep up the motivation. When the walkers returned, there was grilled hotdogs and Pat’s Pizza for lunch! The walk was approximately a 5K route, where walkers looped around the Inner Harbor, passing iconic sights such as the National Aquarium, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, and Hard Rock Café.
RRT volunteers helped in this event with the parking, handing out food, registration, directing walkers along the route, clean-up, cooking, cheering on the walkers and watching the kids at the inflatables. The RRT Volunteers also provided the idea of handing out water at spots along the route which the Lupus workers had never done before.
Maddy Cocchiarella, the Development Assistant, said that this event had the most participants it has ever had and that RRT helped to make a positive and impactful part of the Baltimore Walk. Many of the walkers also made appreciative comments about this year’s group of Volunteers.
Thanks to the kindness of the donors, $37,302 was raised that will go towards supporting future treatments for Lupus. RRT was pleased to be a part of this event and we hope to help the community with more events in the future!
