AU – TFS Tanker Launch

As the devastating bushfires of 2013 ripped through Southern Tasmania, RRT was on the front line providing catering support and our volunteers experienced first-hand the bravery and commitment of our firefighters.  We also witnessed how stretched they were and we wanted to personally do something to ensure they were better equipped to protect Tasmanians next time they faced a similar emergency.

The ability of the Tasmanian Fire Service to protect the Tasmanian people and property from fires has been significantly strengthened ahead of a potentially catastrophic fire season thanks to a $166,000.00 donation from RRT.

On Monday 19th October 2015, the TFS unveiled a fleet of 14 new tankers utilizing revolutionary CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) technology, with the donation from RRT funding the fitting of this system on 6 of the new tankers.  Compressed Air Foam dramatically increases the effectiveness of plain water, as it is much wetter and insulates fuel for twice as long.  By using A Class Compressed Air Foam, the effectiveness increases up to 7 times more effective than water (source Fireground Winter 2014, P10).

The donation was formally recognized at the launch of the new tankers by the TFS and Rene Hidding – Minister for Police & Emergency Management.  Following the official launch, RRT cooked and provided a BBQ lunch for all involved, serving over 100 meals.

WOW! That’s brilliant. Incidentally, you always seem to have good weather for these events. Wish we could say the same in the UK. Still, the RRT spirit is the same the world over!

Brilliant news and very generous of the Plymouth Brethren in Tasmania. May I add this is indeed an excellent system. I watched a demo here in the UK and was truly impressed. Aside from CAFS fire fighting capability, one fire-woman was able to move around a CAFS hose on her own, as they are so much lighter than a standard hose. Firemen explained it normally took several of them to shift around full water hoses.
Keep up the good work Tasmania.

That’s excellent support in an island not quite at the bottom of the world. Tasmania gets fires too!
