RRT Participates in Brisbane’s Homeless Connect

Homeless Connect is an event run twice a year by the Brisbane City Council. Taking inspiration from the quote  “the real test of a community is how it treats its most vulnerable citizens” , the day is a chance for anyone to volunteer their time, skills and resources to serve the homeless. The event attracts the support of many business and community groups throughout the city.

On this day, the disadvantaged people have access to an array of health services, including doctor, dentistry, optometry,  immunisations, haircuts and housing support. Also made available are personal products, towels, shampoo, toothpaste, clothing and bedding.

On the 20th of May 2015, the Homeless Connect was held at Eagle Farm. It attracted over 800 homeless people who came to access the services available, but also to enjoy the community spirit of the event.

Along with the other services a meal was provided to the 800 clients and many volunteers.

Brisbane RRT was asked to assist the food teams who were to be dispersed throughout the two level building. 2 Team Leaders from the Homeless Connect team oversaw the food preparation and serving, and 10 members from the RRT attended the event and took part in preparing the food. Students from various local schools served the food.

Along with the other services a meal was provided to the 800 clients and many volunteers.

A choice of two menus were on offer: Beef and noodles, or Chicken and rice, with Stir-fry vegetables, and while the men cooked seemingly endless amounts of meat on the BBQ’s, the ladies were cooking and mixing the vegetables.

Brisbane RRT was asked to assist the food teams who were to be dispersed throughout the two level building.

After the main course came cakes and muffins for dessert. This was served by both the Homeless Connect and RRT volunteers. After the food had all been served, a massive clean-up throughout the building was in order. Many positive comments were heard, and the team felt as if the homeless people enjoyed the day and the food.

One of the organizers commented “it was a real pleasure working with you all, we loved your professionalism and nothing is a problem approach”.

The team thoroughly enjoyed assisting at this event and we look forward to assisting the Brisbane City Council with further Homeless Connect events in the future.
