AU – Walk for Daniel 2015
The Daniel Morcombe Foundation (DMF) was established by Bruce and Denise Morcombe in 2005, following the abduction of their thirteen year old son Daniel.
The DMF was established as a lasting legacy for Daniel and now has two main aims;
- to educate children how to be safe in a physical and online environment
- to support young victims of crime.
Each year the foundation holds a memorial Day for Daniel with the major event being the Walk for Daniel. The walk starts at the Sunshine Coast Christian College at Woombye, and finishes at Briggs Park in Palmwoods – a total distance of 4km. The walk follows the same path that Daniel trod on the tragic day he was abducted and later murdered.
This year, the RRT assisted in the 11th annual Walk for Daniel event. With an early 5am start, 21 RRT volunteers began the busy day assisting with the car parking duties and shuttle bus coordination for the park and ride facilities. There were 1235 participants in the walk, including Bruce and Denise Morcombe, the QLD premier, police commissioner and a number of high profile national media personnel.
RRT members paraded the “Morky” mascot, engaging young participants. RRT route marshals worked alongside the QLD traffic police division to assist with safety of the participants and crowd control at the major road crossings. RRT directed walkers with their happy and smiling faces providing encouragement along the way.
The DMF expressed their thankfulness to the RRT for helping with the coordination of this worthwhile awareness campaign. RRT was proud to be proactively involved in being part of the 1 million people who participate in Day for Daniel activities nationwide.
