AU – Community Outreach Initiative – Bendigo Special Development School
The Lord Somers Camp and Power House is a not-for-profit organisation that conducts various youth development and leadership programs, based on the Mornington Peninsula east of Melbourne, Victoria, and are active supporters of Community Outreach Programs, which are designed to spread good throughout a community.
On the 26th September 2015, which turned out to be a delightful spring day, the Bendigo Special Development School was the beneficiary of an Outreach program, with over 50 volunteer tradespeople & members of the Lord Somers Camp and Power House carrying out much needed works such as carpentry, painting, landscaping, concreting and more – all very welcomed by the School.
The Bendigo Special Developmental School provides education programs for school aged students with a moderate to severe intellectual disability, who reside in the Bendigo Region. Classrooms are well equipped with an extensive range of educational equipment and communication aids. A hydrotherapy pool, spa room, gymnasium, student kitchen, and extensive bicycle track with a range of adapted bicycles, specialised therapy room and equipment and year round access to hydrotherapy facilities, enrich programs. The school seeks to provide students with disabilities, maximum opportunity to extend their intellectual, physical, social and emotional development in a safe, happy and positive environment.
The Rapid Relief Team offered to prepare lunch for the enthusiastic, hardworking volunteers, and the offer was gladly accepted.
All special dietary requirements of the volunteers was collected, and on the day, the RRT team served up drinks, hot chips & hearty hamburgers with 3 options – vegetarian, gluten free and beef, which were received by the hungry volunteers with gratitude. The feedback was encouraging from the Outreach volunteers, who were enjoying both the food and the bright Bendigo sunshine. The RRT looks forward to supporting the Lord Somers Camp and Power House volunteer team on their next Outreach program!
