Murray to Moyne bike riders enjoy a meal from RRT at Stawell.

.1.

This year was the 29th annual Murray to Moyne bike ride. This ride was initiated and started in 1987 by Graeme (Woody) Woodrup and his wife Hester after Graeme was challenged to ride 520km from the Murray River at Mildura to the Moyne River at Port Fairy, to raise funds for the Port Fairy Hospital. This first fundraising ride in 1987 raised $10,000. It has now grown to include approximately 1500 riders, raising a total of over $1,000,000 from the event – all in support of Hospitals and Health services.

Tragically, Woody’s life ended while on a training ride on the 17th February 1992, and the ride this year was again “in memory of Woody”.

These days the riders and their support teams leave from Mildura, Swan Hill and Echuca on the Saturday morning. All these teams ride in relay fashion, and converge at Hamilton on Saturday night, before continuing the ride to Port Fairy on Sunday morning. The Echuca route takes the teams down through Stawell before heading along to Hamilton.

Stawell has become a mandatory stop for the riders, and this year the RRT was on hand to provide free meals and refreshments for the teams as they came through. The menu chosen for this event was souvlaki-style lamb or chicken in wraps or fresh rolls, served with a choice of sauces, garden salad, pasta salad and coleslaw – followed by watermelon and apples.

The first teams arrived around 6:00pm, and there was a pretty steady flow through to 7:00pm. The last of the riders and crews were fed and on their way again by 8:30pm, riding off in the dark towards Hamilton.

RRT served approx. 400 meals to riders and support crew who were very appreciative of the great food, fantastic atmosphere, friendly people – and the music from the local RRT band.

RRT was very glad to have Hester Woodrup (Graeme’s widow) arrive at the end of the evening, where she enjoyed a hearty RRT meal and commented very positively on the RRT set up and organization.

Hester spoke to the RRT members and told the story of her husband Graeme – with a special emphasis on the dangers and consequences of drink-driving.

The Murray to Moyne coordinators also visited the RRT tent and had a good feed, then sat down with RRT Team leaders to discuss how RRT could assist in next year’s ride – which will be the 30th Murray to Moyne charity ride, with even more riders, and another $1 million plus, raised for Hospitals and Health Services.
