US – Be the Match Walk and Run for Cancer in Columbus OH

On Saturday, August 15th, 2015, at around 6am, RRT volunteers began arriving to set up for the Be the Match Walk and Run. This event was hosted at the Bicentennial Park in Downtown Columbus to help raise funds to save the lives of those affected by blood cancer. Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with this type of cancer, such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. This run provided many people the opportunity to change someone’s life. Be the Match raised $50,615 towards the cure, from this event alone!

Be the Match is a community of donors, volunteers, health care professionals and researchers who share a common goal; to deliver as many cures as possible to blood cancer patients by providing the marrow or cord blood transplant they need. Their passion to save lives drives them to ‘find the match’ for more and more patients every year.

This community provides assistance in three main ways. First, they provide financial assistance to patients who don’t have the resources they need for their cure. Secondly, they have developed a network of millions of willing donors to provide a transplant to those in need. Finally, they fund much-needed research to improve the survival rates for patients.

There were many teams set up to participate in the event, some big and others small, with approximately 1000 runner total. These runners participated in a variety of events starting at 8:30am, from a Tot Trot to running the 5K run later in the day. It was a hot morning and as the runners made their way through the courses, volunteers provided refreshments and encouragement to keep the spirits elevated. The participants did a fantastic job, with the fastest 5k run being completed in just 20:16!
