AU – RRT Supports Warrnambool and District Relay for Life Feb 2016
After fundraising throughout the year, almost 40 Relay for Life teams descended on the Deakin University oval in Warrnambool on Friday February 12th 2016, to set up camp for the night. They had committed to walk, jog or run in the Warrnambool and District Relay for Life in memory of those that have been affected by cancer and loved ones lost to cancer, and to raise funds for the important work that the Cancer Council do.
The Relay for Life has been running in Warrnambool for 14 years and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars that go directly to cancer research. RRT assisted the local Relay for Life volunteers to set up the event through the day and assisted with the registrations at the start of the event.
After the opening speeches, and the sobering candlelight ceremony in memory of lost loved ones, the teams put in an amazing effort running and walking through the night for the 18-hour event.
As morning broke over the oval of weary walkers on Saturday, RRT cooked and served the breakfast provided by Relay for Life for the participates. The teams kept moving around the track till the closing ceremony, at which point the Relay had raised around $85,000.
