AU – RRT supports Walk for Women’s Cancer Sunshine Coast June 2016

On Saturday 25th June, the annual ‘Walk for Women’s Cancer’ event was held at Alexandra Headlands on the Sunshine Coast. Founded in 2004, ‘Walk for Women’s Cancer’ was setup to raise money and awareness for those affected by women’s cancer. With 1 in 6 women being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, this walk sends a message of support to all affected by this terrible disease.

Over 500 participants, the event organisers from the Cancer Council and 38 Rapid Relief Team (RRT) volunteers met at the Alexandra Surf Club to support this commendable cause. RRT was privileged to be included in this event, for the second year running.

At 4:45am several eager RRT volunteers put up signage and marked out the routes the walkers would take. The walk was split into 2 different courses, a 10km and a 20km walk, both routes starting and finishing at the Alexandra Surf Club.

The RRT team gathered near the starting line to serve up a hearty breakfast of bacon & egg muffins before the walkers set off at 8am. RRT route marshals moved into position at strategic points along the route to help direct the walkers.

Other RRT volunteers manned water stations positioned throughout the course greeting participants and providing encouraging words. Back at the finish line, RRT had a delicious and very ‘welcome’ sausage sizzle going for all weary participants and volunteers.

Esther (the event organiser) praised the efforts of the RRT team saying, “Thank you again for an amazing support for the event, I honestly didn’t need to worry about anything on the route as I knew you would have it covered. Your volunteers clearly love their job and are well trained and we had comments from walkers about their wonderful attitude and smiles.”
