AU – RRT Gympie and the NAIDOC Week Celebration July 2016
On Friday the 15th of July the Gympie Civic Centre was buzzing with activity as the locals gathered to celebrate NAIDOC week. People of all ages joined in on the family day celebrations including various entertainers such as Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi-Gubbi Dancers, traditional games, celebrity sports stars, food/drinks and more!
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
RRT was asked to cook and serve hamburgers and a sausage sizzle at the local NAIDOC celebrations. The day started out a bit dismal and overcast, however this did not deter the celebrators, with around 3000 attending the event through the course of the day.
Starting from 9:30am approximately 100 burgers and 200 sausages in bread were served to a number of hungry attendees. A couple of appreciative indulgers comments were “keep up the good work!” and “they were so good I had to come back for a second one!”
The RRT recognize the role Indigenous people play in our community and hope we will be privileged to assist and support future events.
