AU – One Day to Conquer Cancer Victoria
‘One Day to Conquer Cancer – Saving Lives’ was one day to remember!
Once again, dedicated volunteers gave up their precious time on Saturday 22nd October 2016 to raise much needed funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne – the only public hospital in Australia solely dedicated to cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of Australian deaths and affects almost 20% of our population. Over 2000 participants set themselves to walk 25km or ride 60 or 100km in one day, and committed themselves to raising a minimum of $500 each in order to save lives. Many participants raised far in excess of this amount. The grand total raised for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre was over $1.7 million.
Members of the Plymouth Brethren Rapid Relief Team from Lilydale were privileged to be involved in helping the participants in this event. They were involved in general event management duties such as traffic control, event flow, baggage registration and check in.
Once the participants had left on their gruelling walk or ride, the RRT team helped with site clean-up and organisation and then prepared to serve all the weary participants on their return. A hot meal was served consisting of hamburgers, sausages, hot chips and salad. Judging by the way the meals were devoured, they seemed to be most appreciated! A total of over 1500 meals were served in the space of four hours!
Despite the vagaries of the weather (there was sunshine, rain, wind and storms all in one day – typical Melbourne!) and the challenges this presented, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The participants battled the elements and came through victorious, and RRT met every exigency that arose.
The Lilydale RRT team were very thankful for the privilege to be included in such an event. Many of the team members have known first-hand the devastation a cancer diagnosis can bring and they appreciate the way the needs of suffering humanity are being helped by the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The dedication of the research and treating staff at the hospital are all in view of saving lives. This is what One Day to Conquer Cancer is for – Saving Lives!
