AU – Once again RRT Lilydale supports Weekend to End Women’s Cancer, April 2016
The Melbourne Weekend to End Women’s Cancers 2016 always promised to be an epic event! This was to be the third time this event had been held and each time it had drawn out an incredible response from the public; the commitment and enthusiasm of the walkers, and the dedication of the crew and volunteers is awesome to witness. However, this time it was different – this was to be the last time this event would be run in Melbourne and the interest was enormous!
The level of interest with the Lilydale RRT team was no different. Last year their contribution was a lot less, although certainly appreciated. This year, the input was ramped up enormously, and the team were very keen!
While it was still dark on the morning of Saturday 16th April, 35 members of the Lilydale RRT assembled at Albert Park to assist with the 2016 Weekend to End Women’s Cancer – a 60km walk over two days to raise funds for the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre.
They had helped with marking out the route for the walkers the previous day and their task for the morning was to assist with traffic flow, check in the 1014 walkers and give them their packs, and then direct them where to go.
The opening ceremony at these events is always moving, and this time was no different. To hear the stories of those who have lost loved ones to this terrible disease, and see the strength and passion of those who have suffered but are moving forward, is enough to affect the coldest heart; especially those who have been touched in their own lives.
After the dedicated walkers had left on the first 30km walk, RRT Lilydale helped set up the remaining tents for the overnight campers. They then prepared the camp for the return of the walkers, setting up massage tables, foot spa areas and other general tasks.
The major challenge in the afternoon was to provide a substantial meal for the walkers and 200 staff, plus a few family and friends who had come to encourage the walkers. With reinforcements arriving – there were 53 RRT members in attendance at the evening meal – the team set about preparing a meal to remember! Judging by the rate the burgers, salads, quiches and chips disappeared, the hungry walkers seemed to appreciate it. The dessert of pavlovas, cream and strawberries topped off a perfect day.
RRT Lilydale feel honoured to be able to assist such a worthy cause. Some of the walkers were cancer survivors. Others were walking in memory of lost ones. Many members of the team have been personally touched by cancer and feel and understand the devastation it can cause.
The team counts it a privilege to support the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre in their ongoing battle against cancer.
